Lead Mechanical Engineer

The Opportunity

We’re seeking a Lead Mechanical Engineer to take ownership of the design, development, and qualification of electromechanical systems supporting naval platforms.

This role goes beyond design. You’ll help bring systems to life. From reviewing bill of materials and developing detailed technical data packages, your work ensures that what’s built can withstand the realities of the field.

You’ll play a key role in translating engineering concepts into robust, manufacturable, and field-ready solutions.

What You’ll Do

·         Design and develop electromechanical systems and mechanical components for naval applications

·         Review and refine bill of materials (BOMs) to ensure accuracy, cost-efficiency, and manufacturability

·         Create and maintain detailed technical data packages (TDPs) to support production and lifecycle management

·         Develop 3D models and engineering drawings using Autodesk Inventor

·         Support and contribute to environmental qualification testing (temperature, vibration, humidity, etc.)

·         Determine feasibility of designing new components or modifying existing components considering costs, available space, time limitations, planning, and other technical and economic factors

·         Independently analyze specifications and performance requirements to ensure designs can be produced by existing manufacturing methods.

·         Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration across mechanical, electrical, and system components

·         Support prototype development, testing, and design iteration

·         Ensure compliance with applicable military and industry standards

Must have qualifications

·         Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.

·         Six (6)+ years of full-time professional experience working as a Mechanical Engineer.

·         Experience working with CAD software (AutoCAD and Autodesk Inventor preferred) with strong knowledge of 3D modeling, Bills of Materials (BOM), and manufacturing documentation.

·         Ability to evaluate cost, manufacturability, and quality considerations in engineering designs.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience supporting DoD or Navy programs
• Familiarity with MIL-STD environmental requirements
• Experience with product lifecycle support from concept through production
• Prior experience leading or mentoring engineers

The Opportunity

We are seeking a Lead Systems Engineer  to support the development, integration, and validation of Intel-based hardware systems used in mission-critical government applications.

In this role, you will operate at the intersection of systems engineering, hardware performance, and software integration, helping ensure systems are optimized, tested, and ready for deployment.

You will contribute across the full system lifecycle—from evaluation and analysis through testing, integration, and system upgrades—while providing technical leadership to support cross-functional teams.

What You’ll Do

·         Provide technical leadership and guidance to engineering teams supporting system development and integration

·         Analyze hardware and software interfaces to optimize performance and resource utilization

·         Support system design, development, testing, debugging, and configuration activities

·         Evaluate and integrate new technologies and technical solutions

·         Assist users with system integration, troubleshooting, and operational support

·         Install, configure, and manage system utilities, upgrades, and enhancements

·         Diagnose and resolve complex system issues across hardware and software environments

·         Collaborate with vendors and manufacturers to support system troubleshooting and resolution

·         Plan and execute system upgrades, releases, and custom interface implementations

Must have qualifications

Preferred Qualifications

·         Experience across the systems engineering lifecycle (design, integration, testing, and validation)

·         Strong expertise in Linux environments (administration, troubleshooting, performance tuning)

·         Knowledge of networking, storage, and computing hardware (CPU, GPU, NICs, RAID, NVMe, etc.)

·         Experience with debugging tools such as Wireshark, Valgrind, or similar

·         Scripting experience with Python, Bash, or PowerShell

·         Familiarity with RF concepts or RF-based systems

·         Experience with server configuration and integration (Dell preferred)

·         Strong technical documentation and reporting skills

·         Active DoD Secret Clearance is required to start (TS/SCI highly preferred)

• Assist engineering staff with daily lab operations, test data collection, and general technical support tasks.
• Work under the direct technical supervision of senior personnel to complete assigned tasks.

• Bachelor of Science degree in a STEM-related field (e.g., Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related discipline).
• Foundational knowledge or academic experience in software development.
• Working knowledge of computers, operating systems, and common applications.
• Experience (academic or practical) with one or more programming languages such as C, C++, C#, Visual Basic, or other object-oriented languages.
• Familiarity with development in Unix, Linux, Windows, and/or MS-DOS environments.
• Equivalent experience may be considered in lieu of a degree, depending on domain experience and contractual requirements.

• Conduct dockside and at-sea tests; analyze collected data and identify and resolve installation, technical, and procedural issues.
• Provide expertise to resolve navigation system interface issues with other shipboard systems and assist in developing and updating required documentation and procedures.
• Travel to sponsor sites as a technical representative; conduct field tests, interpret and evaluate field data, and serve as a liaison with industrial, governmental, and other sponsors.
• Prepare status, progress, and final project reports describing results of field experiments and/or inspections.
• Light-off, configure, test, troubleshoot, and operate primary systems and peripheral equipment in support of projects.
• Verify functionality of newly installed equipment and evaluate system performance under actual operating conditions.
• Continuously develop skills related to new technology and systems relevant to ongoing and anticipated projects.
• Maintain and seek improvements to test procedures and processes for maximum efficiency, safety, and quality.
• Provide oversight and on-the-job training to lower-level technicians.
• Provide input to Project Managers for proposals and Statements of Work.

• High school diploma or GED
• Technical training in U.S. Navy Navigation Systems.
• Five (5)+ years of hands-on experience with U.S. Navy Navigation equipment and systems, including experience in at least three (3) of the following four (4) areas:
  • Systems Requirements
  • Operational Requirements
  • Test & Evaluation
  • Training
• Recognized expert demonstrating industry and public service leadership in U.S. Navy Navigation equipment and systems.

Clearance Requirement: Active Secret Clearance is required to start
Travel Requirements: <5% annually (only as needed for assistance at other test facilities/shipyard)
Location: Norfolk, VA (Little Creek)

SUMMARY: WR has an opportunity for a Navigation Systems Technical Lead to maintain LBTS operations, including navigation system/parts testing, cable repair/fabrication, and providing technical feedback on technical manuals and MRCs.

Position responsibilities will include, but are not limited to the following:

• Support inspection, testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance of navigation equipment.
• Train and oversee lower-level subject matter experts, field representatives, and technicians.

Candidates must possess the following knowledge, skills, and experience:

• High School diploma or GED.
• Military "A" or "C" school, or technical training in U.S. Navy Navigation equipment.
• Eight (8)+ years of hands-on experience with U.S. Navy Navigation equipment and systems.
• Professional experience solving complex technical problems.
• Hands-on experience in one (1) of the following four (4) areas:
  • Systems Requirements
  • Operational Requirements
  • Test & Evaluation
  • Training
